Tracing the Journey of Jogwad's Iconic Masjid Through Generations
The Jumma Masjid of Jogwad stands as a symbol of faith, community, and heritage, located on Gam-tad land in Patel Street. It has been a central place of worship for the villagers since the early 1800s, soon after Kasamji Kara-Desai established Jogwad Village. This Masjid has been a cornerstone of the spiritual life of the village, evolving over time to meet the needs of the growing community.
Jumma Masjid, the first masjid of Jogwad, was built on the land of Gam-tad in Patel Street. It serves as the central place of worship for the village's Muslim community. The masjid is large enough to accommodate 500 people for prayers at a time. Inside the main Jamat Khana, there are five Safs (rows), each capable of holding 30 people, making a total of 150 people. Additionally, there are four rows behind the main Jamat Khana and six more outside it. The masjid has two Imams who lead the prayers and one Moazzin, who calls for prayer (Azaan).
The masjid is designed to facilitate the daily five prayers as well as the Jumma prayer on Fridays, Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha prayers also pereform here. Its spacious design ensures that it can host a significant number of people during crowded occasions.

The original Jumma Masjid dates back to the early 1800s, shortly after Kasamji Kara-Desai established Jogwad Village. People prayed in this masjid until 1966 CE (1386 Hijri). In 1966, the villagers decided to reconstruct the masjid along with the Makhtab, a primary Islamic institute for children. The original masjid, along with its compound, was martyred that year to make way for a modern structure.
During the construction phase, prayers were temporarily held at the house of Yusuf Bhai Makda (Mota Bhai), located in Makda Street. This house was unused at the time, as Yusuf Bhai's grandparents had vacated it. Construction of the new masjid continued while the Makhtab building was completed first in 1968. Until the new masjid was ready, the first floor of the Makhtab was used for congregational prayers.
This information was shared by Janab Shabbir Bhai Patel, aged 86, in December 2024 to Aezaz Desai. He mentioned that he studied in the Makhtab and prayed in the original masjid during his childhood. According to him, the masjid and Makhtab have existed continuously from before his birth to the present day.
Jumma Masjid is overseen by a dedicated team of Managing Trustees, who are part of the Sunni Muslim Jamat of Jogwad. These trustees are responsible for the overall administration, maintenance, and development of the masjid, ensuring that it remains a center of worship, learning, and community service. Their duties include managing daily operations, organizing religious activities, maintaining cleanliness and facilities, and fostering unity among the congregation.
This collective leadership reflects the commitment of the Sunni Muslim Jamat to preserve the sanctity and functionality of the masjid as a vital part of the community.

The former managing trustees of Jumma Masjid and the Sunni Muslim Jamat hold a special place in our hearts for their selfless dedication and service. These individuals generously gave their time and effort, managing the masjid and community affairs without any compensation, driven purely by their commitment to the welfare of the community. Their leadership and guidance have been instrumental in shaping the masjid into what it is today.
We deeply appreciate and honor their contributions, recognizing that without their hard work and sacrifices, the masjid and Jamat would not have flourished as they have. Their legacy continues to inspire future generations to serve the community with the same dedication and sincerity.
