Preserving the History and Heritage of Jogwad's Early Community
The Old Muslim Qabristan of Jogwad holds significant historical value, serving as the final resting place for many from the late 19th century until 1947. Established between the late 1800s and early 1900s, this cemetery was used until the community began utilizing the General Muslim Qabristan from 1947 onwards.
Although the Qabristan contains numerous graves, only a few have gravestones that provide details about the deceased. Among these, the oldest identified grave belongs to Hawwa Mohamad Fakir Desai, who passed away in July 1935. Her family members, including her son Gulam Mahmad Fakir Desai (died on 9th February 1989) and his wife Hawa Gulam Desai (died on 29th December 2013), are also buried here. Additionally, the Qabristan holds the grave of Molvi Ahmed Bhagat Hashim Mulla (died on 27th August 1996) and a Vanzara family member, whose grave is fully encased in concrete.
This sacred site is managed by Shokat Gulam Desai, who has ensured its cleanliness and upkeep for many years. While the Qabristan is almost full, burials are still permitted.

Before the establishment of the Old Muslim Qabristan in Jogwad, community members were buried in the Qabristan of Kankariya Village, located in Kundan Faliya of Jogwad, before the late 19th century. However, reaching this site was challenging due to the Ambika River separating Jogwad from Kankariya and the absence of a bridge at the time. This logistical difficulty prompted the creation of the Old Muslim Qabristan, situated near Bhangar Wala House (Pahad) along the Jogwad-Kankariya Road.
Today, the Qabristan reflects the history and struggles of early Jogwad residents. However, access to the site has become limited due to private property fencing along the main road. Visitors must now pass through Gulam Mahmad Desai's farm, which provides a pathway to this historic cemetery.
The Old Muslim Qabristan of Jogwad is preserved through the dedicated efforts of the Sunni Muslim Jamat of Jogwad, which oversees its management as a community-driven initiative. Additionally, Shaukat Gulam Mahmad Desai has played a crucial role as the lead caretaker, ensuring the cemetery remains well-maintained and accessible. His commitment to its upkeep reflects the community's deep respect for their ancestors and the historical significance of this sacred site.
